Mission of the Neuroknife Group
To bring to Greece the level of neurosurgical care found at the leading academic centers in the United States—without requiring patients to travel abroad—through an uncompromising commitment to safety, clinical excellence, and deep respect for each individual.
Neuroknife Group was created to function as a truly American-style, academic neurosurgical center in Greece—delivering the warmth and accessibility of a specialized private team.
Neuroknife Group was founded by Dr. Ioannis Karampelas, MD, FAANS, a U.S. board-certified neurosurgeon with subspecialty training in clinical neurosurgical oncology at the Roswell Park Cancer Center and in pediatric neurosurgical research at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York, with the goal of building in Greece a truly American, academic-style neurosurgical center.
Joining this vision as co-founder was Dr. Georgios Alexopoulos, MD, MSc, also a neurosurgeon trained in ACGME-accredited U.S. programs, with a pediatric neurosurgery fellowship at Boston Children’s Hospital, Harvard University. The two co-founders share the same ambition: to bring to their home country the most advanced, academically grounded neurosurgical care.
Particular emphasis is placed on two pillars of excellence:
- Pediatric & Neonatal Neurosurgery, informed by experience at Boston Children’s Hospital / Harvard Medical School, spanning congenital conditions and hydrocephalus to complex endoscopic procedures in infants and children. Boston Children’s Hospital is consistently ranked among the leading pediatric hospitals in the United States.
- Neurosurgical Oncology, with clinical experience at Roswell Park Cancer Center and research experience at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, applying techniques aimed at achieving maximal safe tumor resection. Memorial Sloan Kettering has long been recognized among the leading cancer centers in the United States.
From the outset, the goal was to build a neurosurgical center in Greece that applies the same protocols, the same quality standards, and the same academic culture that define the leading U.S. cancer and university hospitals.
Around this shared vision, a team of four neurosurgeons has been formed, united by advanced training and close, ongoing collaboration. Two U.S.-trained neurosurgeons and two highly skilled neurosurgeons with Greek and European training complement one another, collectively covering the full spectrum of contemporary neurosurgery for adults and children.
Neuroknife has further incorporated a fully structured craniofacial and maxillofacial surgical team, enabling complex skull base, head and neck, as well as advanced reconstructive cases to be managed within a single, coordinated surgical framework. Our approach emphasizes safety and technical precision, with the goal of achieving the highest standards of functional outcome and rehabilitation.
Each patient is evaluated as they would be at a leading U.S. academic center—using modern techniques, a multidisciplinary framework, and complete transparency in clinical decision-making.
Today, we apply microsurgical techniques, 5-ALA fluorescence guidance, brain tractography, O-arm–based navigation, and intraoperative neurophysiologic monitoring, as used in international centers of reference.
Our purpose is not simply to “perform” an operation, but to design the optimal therapeutic plan for each patient, guided by quality of life, safety, and long-term outcomes.

Pillars of Excellence & Clinical Philosophy
Neuroknife Group’s mission is expressed in practice through specific pillars: safety, U.S. training, excellence in neuro-oncology and pediatric care, multidisciplinary collaboration, and individualized treatment planning.
Patient Safety & Quality Assurance
We implement safety protocols and clinical pathways inspired by ACGME training standards in the United States. Each case is reviewed within a multidisciplinary framework, emphasizing preoperative preparation, complication reduction, and structured postoperative follow-up.
U.S. Training, Greek Care
We combine the standardization and evidence-based rigor of centers such as Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, Boston Children’s Hospital / Harvard Medical School, Case Western Reserve University, and Medical University of South Carolina with a human, personal physician–patient relationship and the best of Greek medical tradition.
Excellence in Neurosurgical Oncology
Dr. Karampelas completed subspecialty training in clinical neurosurgical oncology at Roswell Park Cancer Center and in pediatric neurosurgical research at Memorial Sloan Kettering in New York. This experience informs daily clinical practice, applying contemporary techniques for maximal safe resection of brain and spine tumors.
Excellence in Pediatric & Neonatal Neurosurgery
The team provides comprehensive pediatric neurosurgical care. Dr. Alexopoulos completed advanced training in pediatric neurosurgery at Boston Children’s Hospital. Emphasis is placed on anesthetic safety, neurodevelopment, and close collaboration with pediatric neurologists and pediatric oncologists.
Multidisciplinary Care
We collaborate closely with ENT specialists, medical/radiation oncologists, vascular surgeons, anesthesiologists, and pain specialists, ensuring that every complex case is managed holistically—from diagnosis through recovery. In advanced skull base and head–neck pathology, the team is further strengthened by a craniofacial and maxillofacial surgeon, enabling a fully integrated surgical strategy.
Individualized Treatment Plans
Every patient is evaluated through careful discussion, detailed review of imaging, and presentation of alternative options— recommending solutions tailored to age, overall health, and personal priorities.
What We Aim to Achieve in Practice
Neuroknife Group’s purpose is not to be just another neurosurgical team, but a point of reference for patients seeking high-level care in Greece—comparable to that of major centers abroad.
- To reduce the need to seek treatment abroad, by offering equivalent or superior treatment options in Greece and access to second opinions through collaborating international centers.
- To continuously integrate new technologies & evidence-based protocols, through academic activity, conferences, and ongoing training.
- To maintain a human, accessible relationship with patients, with transparent communication, time for questions, and individualized follow-up after treatment.
International & Greek Centers of Training & Collaboration
The team’s training and clinical experience are grounded in leading academic and hospital centers in the United States and Greece.
